The Mental Capacity Act and its implications for nurses

Date: 17 May 2008 to 17 May 2008

Location: Royal College of Nursing, London W1

The Mental Capacity Act addresses the individual's right to express how health care is given both in the present and the future and the individual's mental capacity to make such decisions.  In areas of care where mental capacity is impaired by progressive illness, trauma or mental health, the Act implicitly protects the right of the individual to express their wishes about future care.

The popular misconception is that the Act is about mental health. In the area of health the Act protects patient choice and impacts across a number of fields of practice. This conference will give health care professionals a clearer understanding of how the Act will impact on them and the giving of care.
