RCN members ‘overwhelmingly opposed’ to NMC fee hike

Royal College of Nursing (RCN) members have given a resounding ‘no’ to proposals from the regulator, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to increase fees by 58 per cent. More than 85,000 responses were received to the RCN’s recent survey, of which 99.3 per cent were opposed to the increase.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) today responded to the NHS Information Centre workforce statistics, revealing that the number of qualified nursing, midwifery and health visiting staff has fallen by over 4800 since April 2010, with 247 lost in May, the most recent month for which figures are available.
RCN praises staff for improvements in cancer care

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) today welcomed the results of the second national cancer patient experience survey, published by the Department of Health. The survey found that 88 per cent of patients rated their care as excellent or very good, with 98 Trusts improving on the results of the previous survey.
RCN urges swift implementation of regulations to protect staff from sharps injuries

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) today welcomed the start of a consultation by the Health & Safety Executive on proposals to introduce regulations on medical sharps injuries. The regulations are needed to protect staff from sharps injuries, which can result in life-threatening infections such HIV and Hepatitis.

The report found that suicide rates among people on mental health wards have continued to fall, though it raised concerns about suicides among people treated at home.
