Use networks to combat isolation

Activists may feel alone when they are addressing difficult workplace issues but the RCN has a wealth of networks you can use to combat any feelings of isolation, advises Teresa Okolo.

Teresa is an experienced representative who enjoys representing and getting information to members but feels that low morale is a key issue in her workplace. Teresa says that exchanging ideas is a great way to combat problems and advises getting involved in conferences and study days and taking the opportunity to reflect on what you would do differently the next time. She says: "Always refer to guidelines and local policies whilst maintaining dialogue with other representatives. If in doubt, get support from your local RCN office. It is always better to share the problem - speak to colleagues and feedback your training to members."

The RCN also offers a number of informal and formal opportunities to network with colleagues, including the branch network, UK representative conferences and the RCN Discussion Zone which is open throughout the year.
