60 hands to celebrate 60 years

The Royal College of Nursing has made its mark in the history of Nottingham’s two main hospitals by taking part in a novel 60th anniversary celebration of the NHS.
Sixty people aged between one and 60 were invited by Nottingham University Hospitals Trust to have an imprint of their hand turned into a piece of porcelain art.
RCN Council member and Nottingham branch secretary Gill Cort, who has worked for the trust since 1985 and is staff side secretary there, is among the 60 people whose ceramic casts will be displayed across Nottingham City Hospital and the Queen’s Medical Centre, along with a short story of their connection to the trust.
Each participant has also been interviewed for a short film which is due to be premiered at the trust’s annual public meeting and shown on its website.
As well as marking the 60th anniversary of the NHS, the handprint project is intended to emphasise the importance of clean hands in preventing and reducing healthcare acquired infections.
