Promoting parish nursing

Published: 09 May 2008

A meeting to promote the development of parish nursing in Leicestershire will be held at Cross Hills Baptist Church, Thornton Lane, Bagworth on Monday 12 May from 6.30pm.

Parish nurses are registered nurses with experience of working in the community who are also members of a church congregation, regardless of its denomination. They work with their church to offer spiritual and physical care to members of the congregation and the local community.

The meeting, which coincides with International Nurses’ Day, will be attended by the Rev Helen Wordsworth, the national coordinator of Parish Nursing Ministries UK and a registered nurse.

Vera Harding, a Royal College of Nursing steward at Coalville Community Hospital, said: “The meeting is open to qualified nurses who also belong to a church to give them an opportunity to find out about and become involved in parish nursing.

“Parish nursing is an emerging area of nursing practice in the UK. With the support of their church leaders and ministers, parish nurses serve their church and the local community, respecting and helping people who have a faith and those who do not.”
