A memorial to Mary Seacole – donations needed
Published: 26 October 2012
Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal is seeking to raise funds for a permanent memorial to Mary Seacole, the Jamaican/Scottish Crimean War nursing heroine.
The three-metre-high bronze statue will be located in the grounds of St Thomas' hospital in London facing the River Thames and the Houses of Parliament. You can find out more and make a donation on the Friends of Mary Seacole website.
Some contributors have made moving statements to accompany their donations on the site. Among them is: “We stand on the shoulders of giants. Look forward to standing at the foot of Mary Seacole statue,” and “Mary Seacole deserves to be remembered for all her work and may this also be a memorial for all those brave Black people unrecognised by history.”
