Mike Smith, RCN lead steward and emergency nurse practitionerMike Smith, RCN lead steward and emergency nurse practitioner, has won the Chairman’s Cup at Epsom Hospital.

Mike told us: “I was greatly surprised by the nomination and even more flabbergasted when I found out I had won the Chairman’s Cup. As chair of our Trust staff side and the lead steward for the Royal College of Nursing, I often have to challenge managers and executives on staff-related issues, which is always a difficult path to negotiate. However, I do try and be as positive as I can and by being part of the team that run Nurses' Days, well-being days and our professional development events within our branch meetings, I guess I have played a part in helping to make our busy working lives a little easier. Colleagues have said some lovely complimentary things to me since finding out and I'd like to thank them and the Trust for honouring me in this way.”

Chair Laurence Newman said: “It was a privilege to present this award to Mike – it is absolutely clear to me that he is an individual who will work tirelessly to make sure that we’re doing the very best for our patients and fellow colleagues.”
