RCN Northern Region Welcomes Government Moves to Rate Nurses on Compassionate Care
Published: 15 July 2008
Following the Government’s announcement that nurses will be measured on the quality of compassionate care they deliver to patients, Glenn Turp, Regional Director for the Royal College of Nursing Northern Region, said:
“We welcome the fact that the government is committed to measuring the quality of care that nurses deliver. Today’s proposals by the government are innovative and groundbreaking. Nurses should now be properly recognized for the work they do in delivering compassionate care. This is something that the general public and patients in particular place great value upon.
“The UK’s nurses are extremely hard working and are focussed on ensuring that patients are treated with dignity, compassion and sensitivity. These are all aspects of care which are so important but rarely measured.
“But the focus must be on improving performance, targeting resources and encouraging innovation rather than punishing nurses for poor performance.
“The challenge for us is to work closely with the Government to ensure that we develop practical and meaningful ways to measure compassion, effectiveness and safety of patients”.
