North Western Branch AGM

Over the past year, the RCN North Western Branch has met on a regular basis.
We have been successful in recruiting two new stewards, Joanne McGillin and Mark McLaughlin, who have completed stage one of their training. Linda Purdy will also be undertaken training to become an RCN Learning Rep. Roadshows and walkabouts have taken place throughout the trust and we have also visited facilities within the private sector including nursing homes and private hospitals.
Branch members, Paul McElwee, Mark McLaughlin, Joanne McGillin, Michael Battersby and Kevin Bell attended RCN Congress 2012 in Harrogate, It was a fairly eventfull week, as anyone who followed it will be aware. Branch and Council member Kevin Bell hosted the Northern Ireland fringe event. This was a very popular event which examined the poltical landscape of nursing north and south of the border. Those attending learned about how the RCN and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) are working together to share ideas and improve the professional lives of nursing saff. Annette Kennedy, the director of the INMO informed the event that the same challenges are being faced both areas in, for example, staff shortages, recruitment freezes and pay cuts. We look forward to this parternership developing further.
Two branch members Joanne McGillin and Michael Battersby asked questions to Andrew Lansley (health minister) and Ed Milliband (Leader of the Labour Party) respectively.
Congratulation to all nurses in the North Western Branch area who received awards at the RCN Northern Ireland Nurse of the Year Award in June.
