Over the past year, the RCN Northern Branch has met on a regular basis.
One of the major successes for the branch was holding the first ever Northern Branch conference held on 27 March 2012. ‘Challenging Behaviour – a negative title’ brought key speakers from the RQIA, NHSCT and voluntary organisations. Other activities organised within the branch included Fundamentals of Care seminars for HCAs alongside other recruitment and retention events.

Northern Branch members, Ann Marie O’Neill, Margaret McCambridge, Joanne Sharkey, Fiona Devlin, Vivienne Ferris and Damien McLoughlin attended and participated actively in RCN Congress which was held in Harrogate from 13 – 17 May 2012. The Northern Ireland fringe meeting featured a joint presentation and discussion hosted by the RCN and Irish Nurses and Midwives organisation (INMO). It focused upon the politics of health and social care in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, with an emphasis upon current issues in nursing.

The RCN Northern Ireland Nurse of the Year Awards held in the Culloden Hotel on 14 June 2012 was outstandingly successful with the following awards presented to nurses working within the branch area:

 
• Claire Galloway – winner, RCN Northern Ireland Nurse of the Year Award
• Mabel McFall – runner-up, RCN Northern Ireland Nurse of the Year Award
• Debbie Wylie – finalist, RCN Northern Ireland Nurse of the Year Award
• Eileen Irwin, runner-up Patient’s Choice Award
• Kate McGoldrick, runner-up, Team Manager Award
• Adam Hanna and Padraig Dougan, runner-up, Chief Nursing Officer’s Award

Northern branch members continue to play important roles on regional and national groups. They include:
