RCN leaders visit region
Dr Peter Carter, accompanied by Regional Co-Director Sharon Dennis, recently visited Southampton University Hospitals Trust. The visit was arranged by stewards Pat Kemish, Gill Gardiner and John Elliot. Peter was the initial speaker at an event which fed back the Trusts progress on Dignity work. It was attended mainly by matrons and senior nurses.
There were also presentations by matrons Jill Young Juliet Pearce and Sue Tarrant. Judy Gillow, Director of Nursing, chaired the seminar and gave an overview of patient feedback on dignity indicators such as staff asking permission to enter a patient’s bed space. Peter and Sharon met several nurses on a tour of the neuro and cardiac wards who talked about their experience of working in a regional specialist centre.
Meanwhile, RCN President, Maura Buchanan, was a guest at Benenden Hospital in Kent where she was given a full tour, which, included a look at the paediatric wards as well as the theatres and state-of-the-art imaging department.
Following her tour of the facilities a reception was held where Maura addressed more than 50 staff from the hospital and stressed the importance of the nursing profession and its role in public service.
She also praised the history of Benenden, which recently celebrated its 100th birthday, and its current role as a modern, high-tech healthcare provider that has moved with the times.
