Derek Blackshaw, representative from the South West, was honoured with an Award of Merit at the opening ceremony of Congress 2012. The award was presented by Peter Carter, Chief Executive and General Secretary, for his outstanding contribution to the work of the RCN and for: “representing the very best in RCN activism.”
Derek was awarded the award for being a dedicated branch member, rarely missing a meeting or the chance to advise and support his fellow members, being an active part of the Agenda Committee for Congress for the last five years and attending the RCN Annual General Meeting throughout his four decade membership.
Derek, who became a member of the RCN in 1972, joined three of his fellow activists, to gain their ‘Awards of Merit’ live on stage at the Conference on Sunday 12 May. The awards were given out by: Peter Carter; Andrea Spyropoulos, RCN president; and Kath McCourt, Chair of the RCN Council.
Peter Carter was very complementary of the time and energy that Derek has dedicated to the work of the RCN and his work as an activist over the many decades. Described him as “warm, cheerful and always ready to listen and a worthy winner of the award.”
