RCN welcomes learning disabilities investment

The RCN has welcomed the £96 million in funding pledged this week by the Government to provide people with learning disabilities with better healthcare, community support and employment prospects.
RCN member views sought on forum proposals

RCN members are being encouraged to comment on the final proposals on the Professional Membership Structure, including the forums rationalisation project, which will be discussed by RCN Council in October 2008. Views are being sought on a variety of issues including reporting lines, decision making processes and ways of working as well the number of forums.
RCN seeks member views on Rule 12

Following an interesting debate at Congress in April 2008 where those present voted to set in place arrangements to ‘amend Rule 12’, the RCN is seeking the views of RCN members. RCN Council are keen to stress this is not a consultation on a particular change to Rule 12 at this stage. If Council decide to consider making a change to Rule 12 there would have to be a ballot of RCN members before any change could take place.
School nurse intervention key to addressing childhood obesity says RCN

The RCN has said that the early intervention of school nurses is key to addressing childhood obesity and has called on the Government to compel primary care trusts to address the unacceptable shortage of school nurses.
Unsocial hours consultation announced

The RCN is seeking member views on the implementation of Agenda for Change unsocial hours payments. Current arrangements, which were last updated on 01 April 2008, ensure that nurses are paid when on annual leave 'as if they had been at work'. This is based on an annual leave entitlement of 27 days.
RCN supports new sexual health campaign

The RCN has offered its support to the Family Planning Association’s It’s my right! campaign. Launched today, (04 August 2008), the campaign focuses on the rights of people with learning disabilities to sex and relationships.
NHS pay re-opener clause

This years pay settlement allows for a re-opening of discussions in 2009/10 if certain criteria are met. The clause states: 'The NHS PRB will continue to gather evidence throughout the period of this agreement. In the event that the NHS PRB receive and identify new evidence of a significant and material change in recruitment and retention and wider economic and labour market conditions, they may request a remit from the Secretary of State to review the increases set out in this agreement for 2009/10 and/or 2010/11'.
RCN representatives offered Care Quality Commission transition training

The RCN has announced it will be holding a training day for representatives on the Healthcare Commission and Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) on 12 November 2008. This is to help prepare representatives for the forthcoming transition period and to help them to provide support to RCN members who will transfer to the new Care Quality Commission in April 2009.
Organisations must take responsibility for HCAIs warns RCN

The RCN has said that organisations and management as well as individuals need to take responsibility for the management of healthcare associated infections (HCAIs). The College has warned that concentrating on issues such as hand washing alone will not address the situation and called on the Government to invest in more infection control nurses.
RCN calls for more training for learning disabilities nurses

The RCN has called on the Government to take immediate action to implement the recommendations of an independent inquiry to improve the delivery of care for people with learning disabilities.
