Published: 18 June 2009
Martin Jennings has been chosen as the artist who will to design the Mary Seacole Statue Memorial.
Baroness Valerie Amos, Chair of the Artist Selection Panel for the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue made the announcement and an image of the design is now available to view on the Mary Seacole memorial statue website.
Mr Jennings said that Mary Seacole was a person of extraordinary courage and determination. He added:
"Her compassion and the warmth of her personality were exemplary. She is a truly inspiring subject for an artist. I look forward to the great challenge of making a monument she would have deserved".
The Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal has organised the unveiling of a new photograph of Mary Seacole. The event took place on 22 June 2009 at the Florence Nightingale Museum. Prints of the photograph and a jigsaw featuring the image can be purchased online. A percentage of the proceeds of the sale of this image will go towards the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal.
Mary Seacole was voted the greatest black Briton of all time in 2004. Her memorial statue will be located in central London.
