New gastrointestinal bleeding guideline available

Published: 13 June 2012

A new National Clinical Guideline Centre (NCGC) guideline on the management of upper gastrointestinal bleeding has been published by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

The guideline offers clear recommendations on formal assessment of severity, speed of endoscopy, and management of the cause.
Acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a common medical emergency with 5,000 deaths per year in the UK. Despite previous management changes, mortality rates have not improved in 50 years.

The Royal College of Nursing is an NCGC governance partner.
