New RCN mental health publication launched
Published: 19 March 2009
The Royal College of Nursing has launched a new publication which addresses mental health issues in young people. The toolkit is aimed at nurses who are not mental health specialists but work with children and young people in community and hospital settings.
Available exclusively on the RCN website, the publication, which is entitled Mental health in children and young people. An RCN toolkit for nurses who are not mental health specialists, will help readers identify the skills and knowledge they need to recognise and, if necessary, refer children who have problems affecting their mental health.
This is an important publication as one in 10 children and young people will experience behavioural, emotional and mental health problems at some point in their lives. However, identifying mental health problems and responding appropriately can prove challenging for nurses working with children and young people.
Welcoming the publication of the document, RCN Mental Health Adviser, Ian Hulatt said:
"This is an excellent document. It contains not only useful practical information but also signposts the reader to contemporary resources. The authors are to be congratulated."
