RCN consults members on pay proposals

Published: 18 April 2008

The Royal College of Nursing’s Membership, Representation and Diversity Committee (MRDC) has agreed to hold a consultation with members about the Government’s pay proposals for 2008/09 to 2010/11.

The consultation, which will be conducted through the RCN’s network of boards and branches, opens today (Friday 18 April) and closes on Wednesday 28 May at 12:00 pm.

The Royal College of Nursing is recommending members accept the proposed three year deal.

Dr Peter Carter, the Chief Executive & General Secretary of the RCN, said:

“This offer, which is worth 7.99 percent over three years, remains the highest within the public sector and we believe it is the best deal that could be achieved through negotiation.

“Some of the lowest paid nurses and healthcare assistants will gain significantly more than 8 percent and will be better rewarded as they progress up the career ladder. That is why we are recommending members accept these proposals so we can start getting this year’s award into nurses’ pay packets as soon as possible.

“I am urging members to take this opportunity to have their say on these proposals and to contact their local branch if they have any questions about the agreement.”

RCN members can take part in the consultation by speaking to representatives of their local branch or by visiting the RCN website and completing an online form, which will be available from Monday 21 April.

More information about the consultation and the pay proposals for 2008/09 to 2010/11 can be found at www.rcn.org.uk/payproposals. Boards and branches will receive a letter about the consultation next week.

  • The pay proposals will be debated at a special fringe event at the RCN’s Congress in Bournemouth on Monday 28 April.
