RCN Research Society announces shortlist for award in innovation in doctoral scholarship in nursing

The  Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Research Society has announced the shortlist  for the Akinsanya Award 2009 for Innovation in Doctoral Scholarship in Nursing.

The award is granted to the most innovative thesis in nursing disciplines and aims to celebrate and promote excellence in nursing scholarship, innovation and its potential to influence health care policy and practice.

The shortlisted authors for the Akinsanya Award 2009 for Doctoral Scholarship in Nursing are:

  • Dr Irene Tuffrey: for her thesis “The palliative care for people with learning disabilities”
  • Dr Patrice Van Cleemput for her thesis “Gypsies and travellers accessing primary health care: interactions with health staff and requirements for ‘culturally safe’ services”
  • Dr Martha Wrigley for her thesis “Engaging families with a premature family history of heart disease: A primary prevention study for coronary heart disease”
  • Dr Valerie Shephard for her thesis “Exploring stability of methods in measuring body composition in primary care”.

Dr Peter Carter, Chief Executive & General Secretary of the RCN, said:

"The variety of subjects, styles and intelligence of nursing research on this shortlist are of the highest quality. They are  testament to the vital role nursing research is playing  in encouraging excellence in health care and the development of  specialised knowledge for overcoming the many health-orientated challenges the country faces."

The winner will be announced at the RCN’s International Nursing Research Conference in Cardiff 24-27 March.
