RCN responds to Alzheimer’s Society report on care homes

Published: 26 February 2013

A new Alzheimer’s Society report reveals that 80 per cent of people in care homes have dementia or severe memory problems, and only 41 per cent of relatives think their loved ones enjoy a good quality of life in that care setting.

Commenting on the report, Dr Peter Carter, RCN Chief Executive & General Secretary said: "When such a high number of care home residents have dementia it is essential that staff have the time and support to provide the complex care which is required. Care home providers can create a positive environment by ensuring they provide the right number of staff with the right skills, and support them with thorough training and education."

Low expectations: attitudes on choice, care and community for people with dementia in care homes is available on the Alzheimer’s Society website.

To coincide with the publication of the report, the Alzheimer’s Society has launched a new version of This is me, a tool supported by the RCN which helps people with dementia communicate their needs. An bilingual version of This is me for Welsh speakers is in development. Find out more.
