RCN to manage new fund for nurses in financial hardship

Published: 09 October 2007

Nurses experiencing financial hardship will now be able to apply for grants from a new fund administered by the RCN.

The Mayday for Nurses Fund is part of the campaign set up by economist Dr Noreena Hertz, who asked premiership footballers to donate a day’s pay in recognition of the vital role nurses play in society.

The new fund will be open to all registered nurses in the UK, who may be experiencing hardship due to a range of factors, including:

  • during a prolonged period of ill health
  • following a divorce or separation where there are children
  • when facing an unexpected, essential cost
  • during a dispute with an employer
  • during a period of unemployment.

Commenting on the initiative, RCN General Dr Peter Carter said:

“This new fund will give financial support and offer a helping hand to nurses in times of hardship and times of need. I’d like to publicly applaud all those professional footballers who dug deep and gave generously”.
