The Royal College of Nursing is to seek a meeting with the newly-appointed Chair of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a matter of urgency.
Mark Addison has been appointed as the new chair of the regulator and will take up post in the autumn for an initial period of 18 months.
He is currently Non-Executive Director at the National Archives, and has previously held senior civil service positions.
Janet Davies, RCN Executive Director of Nursing and Service Delivery, said: “We are pleased that the NMC has taken steps to appoint a credible, experienced individual who can start to tackle some of the organisation’s fundamental challenges. We have always stated that the nursing profession needs a strong regulator, which can effectively uphold professional standards and safeguard the health and wellbeing of the public.”
The regulator is currently consulting over plans to hike registration fees from £76 to £120.
Janet said: “Nurses are hugely concerned about the proposed hike in NMC fees at a time when many are struggling financially. We are committed to working with the NMC to help address some of the issues the organisation is facing.”
