The Royal College of Nursing has welcomed the announcement of the introduction of a year long trial which aims to reduce the number of attacks on health care staff in Wales.

The scheme, which the Welsh Assembly Government has pledged to extend if successful, involves CCTV cameras being placed in clinical and non clinical areas of accident and emergency units in Wales.

Director of RCN Wales, Tina Donnelly said the RCN had previously campaigned for safer working environments for NHS staff and added:

"All members of the NHS have a right to feel safe in their working environment whilst caring for the sick and injured. RCN Wales supports the new measures outlined by the health minister as we have campaigned on this issue for some considerable time."

A number of ambulances stationed in the Welsh capital, Cardiff will also be fitted with recording equipment.
