The Secretary of State for Health, Alan Johnson, has reiterated his firm commitment to the three year pay deal negotiated for NHS staff.

In response to media speculation today that the Government may seek to reopen pay negotiations to implement a pay freeze, the Royal College of Nursing has received the following assurance from Mr Johnson:

"I would like to reassure NHS staff across the country that we will honour the three year pay deal in full. It is a fair and balanced agreement which provides stability for the NHS and its staff. There is no question of it being reopened".
