RCN Wales urges Welsh MPs to Get it Right

Published: 14 January 2009

The Royal College of Nursing in Wales, the nursing union and professional body, hosted a reception on Tuesday 13 January at the House of Commons to launch Phase 2 of its Get it Right campaign. More than 20 MPs representing Wales attended the event.

The "Get It Right" Campaign has four strands - Right Numbers, Right Skills, Right Work Place and Public Health Public Service. To achieve world-class health care in Wales there needs to be sufficient numbers of nurses to deliver that care, they need to have the right skills and they need to be supported by the right polices in their work place.

The campaign has provided an opportunity to bring the knowledge and experience of 23,000 RCN members in Wales to the wide ranging health debate. The campaign outlines that nurses know and understand  what works, what doesn’t and what needs to be done to deliver a truly patient centred health service.

Tina Donnelly Director of RCN Wales, said: "We have received support for the Get it Right campaign across all the political parties represented in Wales. This reception provided an opportunity for RCN members to discuss non-devolved issues that are affecting healthcare such as violence and aggression against nursing staff and the regulation of Health Care Support Workers ( HCSWs). The policies outlined in this campaign address areas of nursing, employment and also issues to promote the wider benefit of improved public health."

The second year of the RCN Get it Right campaign will see the organisation raise issues such as alcohol abuse, advanced roles for nurses and bullying and harassment in the workplace. The event follows on from the succesfull Wales launch held at the National Assembly for Wales.

The RCN represents nurses and nursing, promotes excellence in practice and shapes health policies.
