Get it Right year 2

Nurses continue influencing campaigning

As the largest specialist nursing union and professional body RCN Wales, which represents in excess of 23,000 members of the nursing family, will launch the second year of its Get it Right campaign on Tuesday 11th November.

Following the elections to the National Assembly in May 2007 RCN Wales launched the Get it Right  campaign which comprised a series of briefings on a range of clinical and public health challenges facing the new Welsh Assembly Government. Just over a year on from the initial event the trade union, charity and professional body will launch second set of briefings which set out clearly and straightforwardly the views of RCN Wales on the most important health issues the Welsh Assembly Government will face this year.

Ahead of the launch Gareth Phillips, chair of the RCN Welsh Board said, "This campaign has provided an opportunity to bring the knowledge and experience of our 23,000 members in Wales to the wide ranging health debate. Our members know what works, what doesn't and what needs to be done to deliver a truly patient centred health service. This latest publication reviews the response to our earlier policy briefings and sets out a new agenda which we feel the Welsh Assembly Government must address in the coming year."

Tina Donnelly Director of RCN Wales added, "We have received support for the Get it Right campaign across all the political parties represented at the National Assembly for Wales. The policies outlined in this review will address areas of nursing, employment and also issues to promote the wider benefit of improved public health."

The "Get It Right" Campaign has four strands - Right Numbers, Right Skills, Right Work Place and Public Health Public Service. To achieve world-class health care in Wales there needs to be sufficient numbers of nurses to deliver that care, they need to have the right skills and they need to be supported by the right polices in their work place.

The second year of the RCN Get it Right campaign will see the organisation raise issues such as alcohol abuse, advanced roles for nurses and bullying and harassment in the workplace.

The launch of the Get it Right campaign will be hosted by Val Lloyd AM, the chair of the National Assembly for Wales Cross Party Group on Nursing who commented, "The RCN has a track record of delivering practical and sound advice on a range of nursing and general health topics. Their work is based on the reality of healthcare from across the NHS and the independent sector and their policy advice is sort after and most welcome."
