Nurses plan epic charity climb
Published: 18 June 2008
Two West Midlands nurses will embark on a truly mountainous adventure later this summer to raise money for charity.
Pam Smith and Julia Evans are planning to climb almost 6,000 metres to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and down again in aid of the Mary Stevens Hospice in Stourbridge and the Riding for the Disabled Association.
Pam, who has been an RCN member for 31 years, was challenged to do the trek by a colleague at Wolverhampton University, where she teaches student nurses.
She said: "My daughter Claire climbed Kili five years ago and so she is giving me some tips. We will be going up the Rongai route and sleeping in tents!
"It’s an opportunity of a lifetime. I am fortunate to be in good health and since I worked in palliative care for many years I know how precious life is. I just want to help others who are less fortunate."
Pam is being joined on the voyage by Julia, who works for Wolverhampton PCT, and both are training hard for the trek, which starts on August 31 and is expected to take six days.
