Congratulations to Ellie Hodge, a chemotherapy nurse at York Teaching Hospital, who was chosen by the public to win the Claire Rayner Patient’s Choice Award 2013, organised by Nursing Standard.
Ellie, who is a chemotherapy nurse at York Teaching Hospital, was nominated by her patients for the outstanding level of care that she provides.
Kathryn Cook, who was treated for an unusual form of cancer, said: “Ellie was the first healthcare professional who treated me like a real human being rather than an interesting statistic. She is a really good role model for anyone considering a career in nursing. She is like a shining beacon showing others what a difference you can make.”
Also nominating Ellie was Rebecca Hastie who said: “Being diagnosed with breast cancer at 27 is terrifying, but Ellie went above and beyond to make chemo bearable. She is fantastic. I can’t describe in words how amazing Ellie is.”
Regional Director for the Royal College of Nursing in Yorkshire and the Humber, Glenn Turp, said: “This award is a real achievement as it comes from patients themselves and shows that there are nurses out there that will always go the extra mile for the people that they care for. All of the nurses who were nominated for the Patient’s Choice Award deserve to be congratulated for their dedication and commitment to providing compassionate care and the Royal College of Nursing is proud of the work the Ellie Hodge has done and continues to do.”
To help her patients and their families, Ellie has co-written and helped to produce a 10-minute DVD that is given to patients before they start their treatment, which won a hospital award.
