In response to the results of the NHS staff survey results for the East Lancashire NHS Trust, which indicate that 33% of staff are suffering work-related stress in the last 12 months compared with the national figure of 37%, Regional Director for the RCN in the North West Steve Flanagan said : "Many of our region’s trusts are doing well but there are pockets of concern too. East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is under significant pressure from increasing demands. The survey shows that staff are working hard to ensure that patient care is delivered. Worryingly, 33% of staff report experiencing harassment, bullying or abuse from patients, relatives or the public. This could explain why so many staff report suffering work-related stress. The trust must get to grips with this problem and do more to protect their staff to ensure that they can provide patient care without fear of abuse. "Most concerning of all, only 3.54 staff out of 5 recommend it as a place to work or receive treatment. This is a drop from their 2012 survey results and well below the average score for trusts nationally. "We want to see all of our trusts performing as well as the very best. It is vitally important that management teams across the NHS listen to front-line nurses, and health care assistants, as they seek to improve on their scores from last year. Where trusts are performing well, we would like to see more direct partnership working with other trusts in the region, to share best practice. NHS England and the local NHS Commissioners also need to co-ordinate the sharing of best practice across all of our trusts in the region, and to build appropriate performance measures into the contracting of services."

A successful first RCN London Board regional conference took place at Cowdray Hall on 4 March, attended by over 100 members representing branches across London. Regional Director Bernell Bussue opened the day, which had the theme of the Essence of Nursing.

Last summer Philip Anderson and Sam Littlejohns, staff at RCN London, decided to put their advocacy skills to good use and volunteer with the African Prisons Project (APP) in Kampala. APP focuses on three main areas of prisoner welfare: health, education and legal.
