The 10 per cent cut in the number of students starting a nursing or midwifery degree next year was not agreed with us and comes on top of a 12 per cent cut this year, meaning that total nursing and midwifery student intake numbers will be the lowest for 15 years.

RCN opposes Scottish Government's plans to cut student nurse numbers

Commenting on the Audit Scotland report, Overview of the NHS in Scotland’s performance 2010/11, Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Scotland Director Theresa Fyffe said:

“Today’s report highlights the very real challenges our NHS faces to balance its books, meet increasing service demand and improve Scotland’s health record. It’s a very honest assessment and it is clear to us that health boards cannot continue to save money by reducing the size of the NHS workforce, unless it wants to put at risk standards in patient care. The need to make difficult decisions on which services to prioritise and which to de-prioritise is becoming ever more urgent, so we need the Scottish Government to set out a clear vision of how the NHS can continue to deliver good quality healthcare and meet growing demand while its budget is at a standstill.”

RCN Scotland comment on Audit Scotland report on NHS

RCN Scotland response to Scottish Government announcement on integration of health and social care

RCN Scotland responds to Scottish Government announcement on health and social care

RCN Scotland comment on budget report

RCN Scotland Director comments on budget

RCN Scotland Director comments on question to First Minister on whistleblowing

RCN Scotland Director comments on question to First Minister on whistleblowing

Figures released by the Scottish Government’s NHS Information Services Division (ISD) today reveal the number of nursing staff employed by NHS Scotland is continuing to fall, with a further 372 posts lost between June and September 2011. “As today’s report shows, telehealth not only improves patient care, it can also save the NHS money. However, investment has been inconsistent and a survey of our members last year, referred to in the report, found that less than 20% use telehealth in their role. Indeed, if the benefits of telehealth are to be capitalised upon, education for training and staff must be improved.

“Given the difference it can make to patient care by supporting people in their homes and improving access to specialist services, we back Audit Scotland’s call for health boards to consider how to incorporate telehealth when introducing or redesigning services.”

RCN Scotland comment on Audit Scotland report on telehealth

Nurses working in Scotland's NHS are under immense pressure, a survey of RCN members has revealed

Survey reveals plummeting morale and job insecurity amongst Scotland's nurses

RCN Scotland Director Theresa Fyffe responds to today’s announcement regarding public sector efficiency targets in Scotland

RCN Scotland comments on efficiency targets

In response to the new eHealth strategy for NHS Scotland, being launched today, Theresa Fyffe, Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Scotland Director, said:
