MRSA targets must not slip, says RCN

Published: 28 August 2007

Responding to claims that the government will not meet its targets to reduce MRSA , Dr Peter Carter, General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, said:

“NHS deficits are forcing Trusts to reduce staff and cut services, so it comes as no surprise that priorities such as MRSA have been allowed to slip.

“We recognise the government's commitment to tackle infection in hospitals, but we want to see this commitment turned into practical reality. We need to go further, harder and faster to meet the targets.

“Nurses, supported by the RCN, came up with a ten point plan to tackle hospital acquired infections back in 2005. It saddens me that in many areas of the country, little has been done to take on board these practical, cost-effective proposals.”
