RCN responds to Health Select Committee report on the Electronic Patient Record
Published: 13 September 2007
Responding to the report RCN General Secretary, Dr Peter Carter, said today;
“We welcome this report which serves as a reminder of the importance of the Electronic Patient Record to the future of healthcare in the UK. Nurses are already the greatest generator and users of patient data and as a profession they will be the largest group in the NHS using the EPR.
“The report rightly points out the lack of engagement with nurses and other health care workers in developing an electronic record which is fit for purpose. We support the Committee's finding that professional bodies including nurses should be fully involved in decisions at local, regional and national levels in the further development of the EPR. This means that there should be adequate funding, training and education to be able to make the record a reality.”
