Nurses welcome new guidance on care of older people

Published: 17 March 2009

Welcoming the launch of new Guidance for the Care of Older People, issued today by the NMC, Dr. Peter Carter, Chief Executive & General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), said:

“As an organisation which actively encourages and empowers health care workers to improve dignity in care we welcome the introduction of this helpful guidance.”

“We know that nursing staff strive to provide the best, most dignified care at all times. In combination with the RCN’s campaign - Dignity: At the heart of everything we do - the timely publication of this guidance will help nurses to deliver the best possible care to older people. As well as detailing best practice, it will also help nurses to secure the support and resources they need to deliver dignified care".

“We also welcome the publication of guidance for patients detailing the type of care they can and should expect. It will be a valuable tool in reassuring patients entering care and should help them to have a better all-round experience of the healthcare system.”
