The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) today announced the appointment of Jan Maw, who will oversee the occupational health portfolio within her new role as Public Health Adviser.

Before taking up her new post, Jan supported the RCN Nursing Division as an Occupational Health Adviser and has previously been a member of the DH Ad Hoc Working Party on Guidance for Occupational Health. Since qualifying as a general nurse in 1978, Jan has gained experience in adult nursing, rheumatology and infectious diseases.

Jan is a qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse and Registered Nurse Teacher, and currently holds a Nurse Lecturer Post at the University of Sheffield. Jan has also held posts at the former English National Board as Education Adviser, and at the NMC as an Overseas Advisor and Visitor.

Commenting on the new appointment Dr Peter Carter, RCN Chief Executive & General Secretary, said:

“We are delighted to welcome Jan to the Royal College of Nursing. Jan has the experience, knowledge and passion to take this important portfolio of work forward, based on a career that has been immersed in political, educational and practice issues associated with occupational health nursing.”

Jan Maw, RCN Public Health Adviser, said:

"I am really looking forward to working with RCN members. It is a wonderful opportunity to help develop the newly formed RCN Public Health Forum. Occupational health nurses play a unique role in public health nursing and will be instrumental in shaping the new forum and its direction."

“The importance of the health of the working population has never been greater. It is clear that the health and wellbeing of the working population and those seeking to return to work is a high priority for the Government and for the RCN.  I look forward to working with members to ensure that nurses and nursing are at the centre of this debate.”
