RCN: Children’s Workforce Strategy is a missed opportunity

Published: 11 December 2008

In response to the 2020 Children and Young People’s Workforce Strategy, Janet Davies, Executive Director of Nursing and Service Delivery of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), said:

“It’s great to see the Government recognise the need for serious reforms in children and young peoples care. We had called for consultation on the Strategy and had hoped to see health as an equal partner alongside social care, but the focus on health is limited.

“This is disappointing, as every parent knows just how important health is in the care of children and young people. As it is there’s not enough support for health professionals to access the necessary training for working with children. This plan doesn’t go far enough to address the problem.

“The vision for social care for children and young people is sound but the Strategy doesn't do enough to create an integrated children's workforce. Surely the case of Baby P shows that we should focus on health now more than ever.”
