RCN responds to Audit Commission Review of the NHS financial year 2006/07

Published: 23 October 2007

Responding to the publication of the Audit Commission Review of the NHS financial year 2006/07 RCN General  Secretary Dr Peter Carter said;

"These figures show the hidden damage to  the NHS caused by rushed reforms, reversed reconfigurations and short  term thinking. It is unacceptable that patient care and frontline  staff have been cut to produce a quick fix to long term financial problems  whilst a small number of staff at the top has received large payouts to leave  their posts.

"We acknowledge there has been improvement  in NHS finances, but if we are to move forward and tackle the long  term economic problems of the NHS we must now learn from these  lessons"
