RCN responds to new Clostridium difficile infection figures from the Health Protection Agency

Commenting on the news of a reduction in the rate of Clostridium difficile (C.diff) infections within the NHS between April and June 2008, Dr. Peter Carter, Chief Executive & General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), said:

“The RCN is very pleased that the hard work of nurses and their NHS colleagues in tackling C.diff is paying off in significantly reduced infection rates and increased patient safety.

“Nurses, by showing leadership and innovation, have led the way in driving down C diff infection rates. But, the challenge remains as the figures highlight that there are wide variations in infections rates between Trusts with some performing considerably worse than others.”

“Therefore it is vital that Government and Trust give nurses the necessary authority, staff, training and financial support to ensure infection rates continue to fall.”
