RCN welcomes launch of DH dementia strategy
Published: 04 February 2009
Welcoming the launch of the first National Dementia Strategy for England, Dr. Peter Carter, Chief Executive & General Secretary, Royal College of Nursing (RCN), said:
"The launch of the Department of Health’s National Dementia Strategy has the potential to significantly improve the lives of the millions of patients, families and carers who are affected by this debilitating condition.
"We particularly welcome the expansion of dedicated memory services, in which specialist dementia nurses play a key role. These services have a track record in providing a vital early intervention that can positively affect the care and support for dementia patients, their carers and families.
"Increased investment in training and education for the whole healthcare community will be needed to bring about meaningful improvements for dementia patients.
"The launch of the strategy injects a sense of optimism and purpose. Dementia, in the absence of a cure, is likely to continue to affect increasing numbers of people for the foreseeable future, and the introduction of this strategy is very welcome indeed."
