RCN responds to Schizophrenia Commission report
Published: 14 November 2012
Responding to today’s report by the Schizophrenia Commission, Dr Peter Carter, Chief Executive and General Secretary of the RCN said: “This report shows the impact which schizophrenia has on individuals and carers, and we support the Commission’s call for more investment in early intervention and community care.
“It is shocking that people with schizophrenia are dying 15 – 20 years before the general population, and it shows that they are being let down.
“What is worrying is that these findings are coming at a time when cuts to nursing staff numbers are putting a greater strain on patient care and putting community care services at risk. With mental health nurses integral to providing the bulk of care, we want to see their roles protected so all of those with mental health problems get the help they need.
This report highlights the need for greater investment in these areas, not more cuts.”
