RCN comment on “deep clean” deadline
Published: 30 March 2008
Commenting on the programme to “deep clean” all NHS hospitals in England by the end of this month RCN Director of Nursing and Service Delivery Janet Davies said today;
“The recent programme of ‘deep cleaning’ of hospitals in England has been a welcome addition to the on going work that nurses and other NHS staff do daily to combat Healthcare Associated Infection.”
"Healthcare Associated Infection is a deep rooted problem that can only be solved through continual attention from a wide number of sources. Deep cleaning is part of the process, but we need to see increases in numbers of specialist infection nurses, pharmacists and funding for training. The government has made some encouraging promises on these essential areas but these pledges must now transform into progress on wards."
