RCN response to the Government’s public sector pensions offer

Published: 02 November 2011

RCN Chief Executive & General Secretary, Dr Peter Carter, said:

“These changes are a welcome sign and are certainly a step in the right direction.  We believe that the amendments that the Government have offered today show that they have taken on board the depth of feeling that nurses, as well as other public sector workers, have over this issue.

“However, the Government’s offer does not change the fundamental fact that they are still looking at making nurses and healthcare assistants pay more, work longer yet receive less pension in retirement. It remains our belief that the current NHS pension scheme is fit for purpose following the changes made in 2008. Those fundamental changes to the scheme, which the RCN supported, saw an increase in contribution where the highest earners pay most, and protection for the taxpayer.

“What is needed now is continued negotiations with the Government to ensure that there is a fair deal for the frontline.  The RCN remains ready to ballot and will fully support the 30 November Day of Action.”
