RCN statement on Office for National Statistics figures on Clostridium difficile and MRSA

Commenting on the latest Office for National Statistics MRSA and Clostridium difficile figures, published today, RCN General Secretary & Chief Executive, Dr Peter Carter, said;
“These figures show an unacceptable rise in Clostridium difficile cases, but they must be taken in context. Since 2006 we have seen major Government announcements designed to tackle Healthcare Associated Infection which have begun to put nurses at the centre of prevention and control of the problem.
“New measures to introduce infection control nurses, specialist training, pharmacists and deep cleans have ensured that the MRSA and Clostridium difficile is being addressed. However, we must ensure that the pace of change remains high and Government commitment results in the care and safety that patients deserve.”
