racked

with pain. Not wracked

radiographer

takes x-rays

radiologist

reads x-rays

RCN Students Committee

no apostrophe after Students; Committee is capped up

registered nurse

lower case

ringfence

as in funding. One word

RNIB

now Royal National Institute of Blind People (not “for the Blind”)

royal colleges

lower case when referring to the collective; upper case for individual royal colleges – for example, the Royal College of Surgeons

Royal College of Nursing

that’s us. Officially the Royal College of Nursing of the United Kingdom – worth using full title in material aimed at international audiences. Avoid “the College” where possible but this is an acceptable variation when “the RCN” becomes too repetitive

precede any constituent part of the organisation with RCN to be clear that it is part of the RCN

use lower case for most RCN-related bodies eg RCN forums (collective); RCN branches; RCN South Barnsley branch; RCN Eastern region; the board of RCN Eastern region; RCN Council committees

upper case for RCN departments, specific forums, RCN Council: for example, the RCN Mental Health Forum; RCN Policy and International Department; but RCN nursing development committee
