Nursing plays a distinct role in health and social care.  Often the lead in the patient journey, nursing staff understand the holistic needs of patients, their carers and families and are in a unique position to cross health and social care boundaries and coordinate care delivery.  The views of RCN members are important in the reform of the social care system as they manage the many daily challenges of the current system.  These challenges include carrying out needs assessments, form-filling, and discharge planning, in addition to dealing with health care needs that result from unmet social care needs.

This is the RCN’s response to the Government’s consultation Transparency in outcomes: a framework for social care (PDF 108KB). The RCN has also responded to the Government’s publication Vision for adult social care: Capable Communities and Active Citizens (PDF 117KB) and to its Commission on the funding of care and support (PDF 538.8KB). The latter clearly sets out the RCN’s views on the main challenges for reform, and principles on which reform should be based and the RCN would urge Government to read this response also.
