RCN Counselling Service

The RCN counselling service is part of RCN Member Support Services. The service provides free, confidential support and assistance to help you to deal with any challenging emotional issues that you may face. 

This includes personal problems such as stress, depression, anxiety, bereavement, relationship breakdown, domestic violence, substance misuse, eating disorders and low self-esteem. We can also help with work-related difficulties such as bullying and harassment, managing your workload, manager/ supervisor relationships and adjusting to new responsibilities.

How to get help

The counselling service operates over the telephone so you can access counselling at a time that suits you, from the comfort of your own home. Occasionally we can offer face to face counselling depending on where you live. To make an appointment, call the RCN member support services helpline on 0345 408 4391. 

Appointments can be booked between 8.30am and 8.30pm, seven days a week, 365 days a year (these hours apply only to counselling enquiries on this helpline). One of our counsellors will then phone you back at an agreed time, so the RCN pays for the call. During your first appointment the counsellor will establish what help you need, and arrange further contact if necessary. 

We have a network of affiliate counsellors on hand throughout the UK. We also offer emergency appointments.

As part of your counselling with the RCN we will invite you to complete a brief, confidential questionnaire. The information you provide will help to give focus to your sessions and will also help your counsellor to have a better understanding of how you are at the moment.

Your counsellor will invite you to complete the same questionnaire towards the end of your therapy and sometimes after each session you have. This enables us to evaluate both your progress in counselling and also the performance of our service.

Should you decide not to complete the questionnaire this will not affect your access to the service. If you have any questions about this process your counsellor will be happy to answer them.

General enquiries and information

Email your general enquiries about the counselling service to: mss@rcn.org.uk. Please include your membership number and telephone number and put 'counselling enquiry' as the subject line. Emails will usually be answered within five working days. If you wish to refer yourself to the counselling service you can do so by completing our online referral form selecting 'counselling' on the drop-down menu.

In addition to offering counselling to members the counselling service also supports other RCN staff and activists through a training and consultancy service to enable them to support members and help them to access the service.
