The primary function of WING is to offer support and information to RCN members who have an injury, physical or mental illness or disability that affects their employment and/or career.
The RCN WING constitution also states that the group will:
- Act as a pressure group to encourage employers and others to adopt good training and risk assessment in all aspects of health and safety at work provide all RCN members with information of their rights in relation to injury, physical or mental illness or disability.
- Encourage good employment practices, including the early treatment of nurses, health care assistants and nurse cadets suffering from work-related injury or disease, retraining, rehabilitation and redeployment.

An essential part of the work for RCN WING is providing valuable advice on entitlement to welfare and NHS injury benefits. They also provide advice through quarterly newsletters and a dedicated advice line.
A whole range of advice sheets have been prepared covering many topics from claiming specific benefits to surviving litigation, from increasing independence to meeting one's manager.
