Maria Trewern, Chair and South East member
Maria Trewern (formerly Nicholson) is Chair of RCN Council from January 2018. Maria became a nurse in 1977 and has been both a Lead Steward and a Health & Safety Representative. She has extensive experience in the NHS and independent sector specialising in workforce strategy, development and staffing levels, and has an MSc in Healthcare Management. Maria was on the RCN Agenda Committee 2002 – 2005 and 2009 – 2011. In 2013 she was elected to the RCN South East Board and was previously Chair of the Buckinghamshire branch. She is Joint Vice-Chair of the RCN Finance & Investment Committee.
Richard Jones MBE, Vice Chair and Wales member
Richard is Vice Chair of RCN Council from January 2018. He has over 40 years’ experience in nursing and nursing education. Between 1990 and 2010 (when he retired) he worked for RCN Wales, latterly as the Deputy Director and Head of Employment Relations, with responsibility for introducing Agenda for Change into the NHS in Wales. He works sessionally as an external clinical reviewer inspecting NHS hospitals across Wales. He is currently President of the Cwm Taf branch and has previously served as Vice Chair of the RCN Wales Board.
Dr Cecilia Akrisie Anim CBE, President
Cecilia trained as a midwife in Ghana, before moving to the UK and qualifying as a nurse in 1977. Cecilia now works as a clinical nurse specialist in sexual and reproductive health. Cecilia is an accredited RCN steward and safety representative, and was secretary of her local RCN branch for 10 years. In recognition of Cecilia's contribution, she was awarded the RCN Certificate of Merit for outstanding service to members. She served on the RCN London Board before being elected to Deputy President in 2010. Cecilia has been the RCN’s President since 2015, having been re-elected for a second term of office.
Professor Rod Thomson FRCN, Deputy President
Rod initially studied psychiatric nursing before training in general nursing and as a health visitor. He is now Director of Public Health in Shropshire and is a visiting professor at Liverpool John Moores University’s centre for public health. Rod was a member of RCN Agenda Committee 1995 – 1999, Vice Chair of Congress 2006 – 2010 and Chair of Congress 2010 – 2014. He was a member of the RCN North West Board 2002 – 2010. He was awarded the RCN Fellowship in 2002.
David Miller, East Midlands
David qualified as a learning disability nurse in 1990 and has since worked in the fields of forensic, mental health and psychiatric nursing. His is currently on a secondment as the local services staff side chair for a large mental health and integrated health care provider in Nottingham. David is an accredited RCN steward, safety representative and learning representative and previously served on RCN Council 2009 – 2013.
Cynthia Davis, London
Cynthia has been a nurse and midwife for over 30 years. She has strategic experience as a Deputy Director of Nursing, winning an award for her Trust for building capacity and organisational improvement. She is now a senior lecturer in mentorship and practice education. She is a member of the Chief Nursing Officer BME advisory group and is a judge for the Nursing Times Awards. Cynthia has been a member of the RCN London Board since 2015.
Trevor Peel, Northern
Trevor qualified as a nurse in 1973, worked in health services until 1987, then joined RCN staff for 12 years. His career then covered posts in the Cabinet Office and as a prison governor. Trevor served previously on RCN Council and also in a number of charity trustee positions. From 2013 – 2015 he has represented the RCN on the National Pensioners Convention executive committee. In 2015 Trevor was elected to the RCN Northern Board.
Siobhan Donald, Northern Ireland
Siobhan has over 25 years’ experience in acute general nursing as both a practitioner and as a manager. Her current role is as a commissioning nurse consultant for acute and specialist care. In 2015 Siobhan worked as a consultant to review the services of the emergency department at University Hospital Galway with an aim of identifying good practice and making recommendations to improve service delivery and patient safety.
Dave Dawes, North West
Dave has over 25 years’ experience in hospital and community care in both the NHS and in the independent sector. He has been an accredited RCN steward since 1992 and first became a member of the RCN North West Board, which he now chairs, in 2002. From 2003 to 2005 Dave served on the RCN Agenda Committee, and he is the public relations officer for his local branch. He is a visiting lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University and is Director of Community Health Innovation in Manchester. Dave is the RCN Honorary Treasurer and Chair of the Business Committee.
Elspeth Caithness, Scotland
Elspeth has over 25 years’ experience with a background in acute medical nursing. She is an accredited RCN steward and safety representative and has been Vice Chair of the RCN’s Safety Representatives Committee. Elspeth is North Highland Branch Chair and was re- elected to the RCN Scotland Board in 2014. She is currently seconded to NHS Highland as a partnership facilitator to develop and promote the awareness of health and safety issues within the workplace.
Vicky Brotherton, South West
Vicky qualified as a nurse in 1982 and has worked across a diverse range of disciplines including care of the elderly and learning disability nursing. Since 1989 she has worked as an ophthalmic nurse practitioner. She is an RCN accredited steward and safety representative and Chair of the Plymouth branch.
Sue Warner, West Midlands
Sue has been a nurse and manager in the NHS for nearly 40 years. She worked in orthopaedics, gynaecology and paediatrics before becoming a district nurse, and currently works as a health visitor. Sue has been involved with her local branch since 2001, and was elected to the West Midlands Board in 2003. In 2015 she was elected for a second term of office on RCN Council. Sue is Joint Chair of the Nursing Practice and Policy Committee.
Carol Popplestone, Yorkshire & The Humber
Carol has been a registered nurse since 1978. She works as a clinical nurse specialist for Macmillan developing and providing a nurse-led service for patients with urological cancers. Carol is an accredited RCN steward and has been a member of the RCN Stewards Committee since 2013. In the past Carol has been a member of the RCN Yorkshire and the Humber Board.
Brian Murphy, Health Practitioner
Brian works full time as an RCN representative for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Before being elected onto RCN Council, Brian held the Scottish seat on the RCN UK Health Practitioner Committee, of which he was also Vice Chair. He is an executive member of the RCN Greater Glasgow branch and sits on the NHS Education for Scotland Health Care Support Worker advisory group.
Charlotte Hall, Student
Charlotte is studying adult nursing at the University of the West of England (UWE). She is a UWE student ambassador, peer assisted learning leader, and an elected campus officer for her student union. Charlotte founded, and is president of, the adult nursing society at UWE. She has been involved running local campaigns including "Bursary or Bust".
