NHS 70 – looking back

Seventy years ago, the RCN welcomed free health care for all for the first time. Our member journal at the time, the Nursing Times, dedicated significant column inches to the revolutionary new National Health Service. The positives were examined alongside possible pitfalls, with processes and management structures explained in detail.


RCN ambassador reveals personal story behind her role

The RCN has welcomed the launch of the biggest NHS recruitment drive in its 70 year history. The campaign will highlight the vast range of opportunities available in the NHS for potential new recruits and will initially put the spotlight on nursing.


Prison guidance to be updated to protect nursing staff from spice

Following pressure from the RCN, the prison service will review guidance to better protect nursing staff from exposure to psychoactive substances. RCN members reported suffering from the effects of inhaling spice and other psychoactive substances.


More health visitors needed to help tackle childhood obesity

The RCN has responded to the Government’s updated strategy on reducing childhood obesity, calling for ministers to increase the number of school nurses and health visitors. Preventative services, including obesity clinics, are being cut across the country as public health funding continues to dwindle.


RCN warns festival-goers about the dangers of gas poisoning

As the UK festival season gets underway the RCN is urging people not to put themselves at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Around 50 people a year die from carbon monoxide poisoning in the UK and 4,000 people are taken to A&E.


RCN calls for greater equality on Windrush Day

The RCN has called for greater equality for black and minority ethnic (BME) nurses in the health service as the nation celebrates 70 years since the Empire Windrush docked in Britain. It is estimated that around 100,000 nurses from the Caribbean and Africa came here to train between 1948 and 1973.


Lessons must be learned from Gosport hospital

The RCN has said the nursing profession must work hard to seek out the lessons from the Gosport Independent Panel report, which found more than 450 patients died after being given powerful painkillers inappropriately.


Improving the patient experience through digital developments

Janet Davies explains how RCN members can help shape the digital agenda. “Ensuring that nurses and other professionals involved in delivering care have access to the right patient information is integral for the delivery of high-quality and safe healthcare.”

Aseptic technique Creating consensus on standards of practice
