Appointment of new interim RCN Director of Nursing Policy and Practice

Bronagh Scott, currently Executive Director of Nursing at the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in South Wales, will be shortly joining the College as interim Director of Nursing Policy and Practice. Bronagh will start the interim position on 3 December for six months, while the College’s permanent Director of Nursing Policy and Practice, Dame Donna Kinnair, serves as Acting Chief Executive & General Secretary.

RCN Council election candidates confirmed

RCN Council election candidates confirmed. Candidates standing for election to the RCN’s governing Council have been confirmed. Details of who has put themselves forward can be found on the elections pages of the RCN website. Voting will open by postal ballot on 21 November and close on 11 December.

Overall increase in nurses and midwives masks 'severe workforce instability'

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has released figures showing the number of nurses and midwives registered to work in the UK has increased by almost 4,000 in the past 12 months. At the end of September there were 693,618 people on the NMC register.

RCN to consult members in Northern Ireland on industrial action over pay

The RCN is asking members working within the HSC in Northern Ireland if they would be prepared to be balloted formally on industrial action over the continuing absence of any pay award for 2018-2019. Nursing staff in England, Scotland and Wales have already received their pay awards for the current year.

RCN urges Government to put £1bn back into nursing higher education

The Fund Our Future campaign aims to get at least £1bn a year back into nursing higher education in England to help students struggling to make ends meet and stop the catastrophic fall in nurse numbers. It aims to influence how extra funding for the NHS will be spent as a plan is drawn up for how services are prioritised over the next 10 years. This plan is expected to be published in December.

Government plans for preventative health care risk failing without more funding

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has outlined his long-term vision for the NHS, revealing plans to revolutionise the Government’s approach to prevention through a focus on primary and community care services. He’s announced plans to release a green paper next year outlining measures to improve prevention of illness.

Government clamps down on violence against NHS staff following RCN campaigning

In a speech at the RCN event, Matt Hancock revealed details of the first ever NHS violence reduction strategy to protect nursing staff from violence and aggression at work and ensure offenders are punished appropriately. He outlined how the NHS will work with police and prosecutors to make sure victims are supported to give evidence and achieve swift prosecutions.

RCN student members have launched a campaign calling for the Government to prioritise funding for nursing higher education in England.
