RCN UK Students Committee

The RCN Students Committee provides a voice for the thousands of student nurses who are members of the RCN. The committee is made up of one student member of Council, one student member of the Trade Union Committee, one student member of the Professional Nursing Committee, two representatives from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, and one representative from each of the nine English regions. Through the student member of Council the committee can influence RCN policy and strategy on matters relating to student nurses and nursing education.

Craig Davidson

Member for Scotland, January 2018 - December 2019

Craig is currently studying adult nursing at Glasgow Caledonian University, where he is School Officer for the Department of Nursing and Community Health. He also sits on the Scottish Health Students Council, is an ambassador for the Student Nurse Project @StNurseProject, and is student editor for the Nursing Times. During his studies, he has developed a special interest in oncology and palliative care. Craig was recognised by @WeNurses list of #100outstandingnurses who made an impact in nursing in 2018; he was one of only three students identified. Craig is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion and promoting nursing as a career for all.

Jess Sainsbury

Jess is an adult and mental health nursing student at Southampton University. She has attended RCN Congress twice – the second time as a voting member – and is also an RCN Student Information Officer. Jess is also a lead contributor for The Student Nurse Project @StNurseProject.

Amy is an adult and mental health nursing student at City, University of London where she is an elected student representative. Amy won an award for the impact she made in this role in 2017-18, and was also selected to join the Council of Deans’ Student Leadership Programme in March 2018.

Laura is an adult nursing student at the University of East Anglia. Since joining the university, along with other enthusiastic members of the nursing course at UEA; she has been able to make positive changes to the nursing society and other aspects of being a student nurse in a university that caters for a diverse range of subjects. She attended Congress in the first year of her degree, which she describes as being a huge influence to becoming further involved with the Royal College of Nursing.

Kelly is a mental health nursing student at the University of Derby (UoD). Kelly is the Secretary for the Nursing Society at UoD; she is also an RCN Student Information Officer and a Committee Member of the Derbyshire RCN Branch.

Harriet is studying Adult Nursing with Registration at King’s College London. She is a passionate campaigner on nursing issues including safe staffing and fair pay. Harriet has been an RCN Student Information Officer for 18 months, and attended RCN Congress 2018 as a voting member. 

Lyndsey Curtis-Dawson

Lyndsey is a children’s nursing student at Teesside University. Lyndsey has two young children and is hoping to work within a paediatric A&E department when qualified. Having spent time living in a developing nation – witnessing first-hand another country’s healthcare system – Lyndsey is passionate about protecting the NHS.

Mark studies adult nursing at Queen’s University Belfast. He believes that the earlier we equip RCN student members with the skills and attributes to be activists, the more powerful RCN advocates they will be when they join the workforce.

Carolyn is studying Learning Disability Nursing at Queen’s University Belfast. On her course, Carolyn can draw upon her experience working as a Nursing Assistant at Ulster Hospital. She believes that the most effective way to improve patient care is to invest in educating and supporting student nurses.

Sam is studying Adult Nursing at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he is also a Student Quality Ambassador. Sam is passionate about supporting nursing students to get their voices heard, especially following the recent introduction of tuition fees for Nursing courses.

Dawn is studying Mental Health Nursing at Robert Gordon University. Dawn is a class representative at University; she is also an RCN Student Information Officer and has twice attended RCN Congress, including once as a voting member.

Jodie is a third year adult nursing student at University West England (UWE). Alongside her position on the RCN Students Committee, Jodie has worked as a Student Ambassador, a Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) Leader, Senior PAL Leader and Media and Publicity Officer for the UWE Adult Nursing Society.
Alice Duncan Students Committee

Member for Wales, January 2018 - December 2019

Alice studies Mental Health Nursing at Bangor. Previously she was a trustee for PANDAS, a mental health charity, where she developed training and support groups nationally. She’s planning on becoming an accredited RCN Learning Rep when she qualifies.

Duncan is a second-year adult nursing student at Swansea University. Duncan is motivated to engage with student members both online and face-to-face, to ensure he is representing their views and advocating effectively. He has been a Student Information Officer since 2017.

Olatunde is a mental health nursing student at the University of Hull, where he is Student Ambassador for the Faculty of Health and Social Care. He has been an RCN Student Information Officer since 2017. Olatunde is passionate about improving student engagement with and awareness of the RCN, and what it can offer them.

Lucy Mason Students Committee

Member of the Professional Nursing Committee

Lucy is a 3rd year children’s nursing student at the University of Birmingham. Within her local RCN branch she is currently the branch secretary and has been an RCN Student Information Officer. She’s active on social media in a professional capacity. She has been shortlisted twice for Nursing Times Most Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year. Also, she is the project coordinator for The Student Nurse Project @StNurseProject. Lucy is very passionate about working in research when she qualifies.
