RCN UK Students Committee

The RCN Students Committee provides a voice for the thousands of student nurses who are members of the RCN. The committee is made up of one student member of Council, one student member of the Trade Union Committee, one student member of the Professional Nursing Committee, two representatives from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, and one representative from each of the nine English regions. Through the student member of Council the committee can influence RCN policy and strategy on matters relating to student nurses and nursing education.

A number of Students Committee seats are coming to the end of their term. Nominations for London, Northern Ireland, North West, Scotland, South East, Yorkshire and the Humber, Wales and West Midlands seats are now open. Please visit our elections page for more information.

Charlotte Hall Students Committee

Student member of Council

Charlotte recently graduated from BSc Adult Nursing at the University of the West of England (UWE). She was a UWE student ambassador, peer assisted learning leader, and an elected campus officer for her student union. Charlotte founded, and was president of, the adult nursing society at UWE. She has been involved running local campaigns including "Bursary or Bust".

Georgina Ledwith Students Committee

Member for London

Georgina is a student of adult nursing at Buckinghamshire New University, where she’s a class rep. Before university she worked as a facilitator for the National Citizen Service (NCS), helping young people create campaigns and social action projects, and volunteered at a local care home.

Simon Mackay Students Committee

Simon Mackey

Member for Northern Ireland, January 2017 - December 2018

Simon studies Mental Health Nursing at Ulster University. As well as an SIO, he’s been a senior course representative and is on the committee of the university's Nursing Society. Previously he was a learning disability senior support worker.

Mark Lavery Students Committee 2018

Mark studies adult nursing at Queen’s University Belfast. He believes that the earlier we equip RCN student members with the skills and attributes to be activists, the more powerful RCN advocates they will be when they join the workforce.
Ellie Jolley Students Committee

Ellie Jolley

Member for Scotland, January - December 2018

Ellie studies adult nursing at the University of Edinburgh. She’s a class rep and committee member for the university Nursing Society. Ellie won RCN Student Information Officer of the Year at Congress 2017 after her work as a member of the Nursing and Midwifery Bursary Stakeholder (NMBS) advisory group in Scotland.

Craig Davidson Students Committee

Member for Scotland, January 2018 - December 2019

Craig is currently studying adult nursing at Glasgow Caledonian University, where he is also School Officer for the Department of Nursing and Community Health, Vice President of the Nursing Society and a Student Leaders Trainer. During his studies he has developed a special interest in oncology and palliative care. Craig is a passionate advocate of recruiting more men into nursing.

Alice Duncan Students Committee

Member for Wales

Alice studies Mental Health Nursing at Bangor. Previously she was a trustee for PANDAS, a mental health charity, where she developed training and support groups nationally. She’s planning on becoming an accredited RCN Learning Rep when she qualifies.

Matthew Thomas Students Committee

Matt is in his third year of Nursing studies at the University of South Wales having previously completed a degree in Medical Sciences. Matt is an RCN Student Information Officer and has already procured a job within an Emergency Department following the completion of his studies.

Laura Bird Students Committee

Member for Eastern

Laura is an adult nursing student at the University of East Anglia. Since joining the university, along with other enthusiastic members of the nursing course at UEA; she has been able to make positive changes to the nursing society and other aspects of being a student nurse in a university that caters for a diverse range of subjects. She attended Congress in the first year of her degree, which she describes as being a huge influence to becoming further involved with the Royal College of Nursing.

Kelly Hitchcock Students Committee

Kelly is a mental health nursing student at the University of Derby (UoD). Kelly is the Secretary for the Nursing Society at UoD; she is also an RCN Student Information Officer and a Committee Member of the Derbyshire RCN Branch.

Lyndsey Firth Students Committee

Lyndsey Firth

Member for Northern, January 2018 - December 2019

Lyndsey is a children’s nursing student at Teesside University. Lyndsey has two young children and is hoping to work within a paediatric A&E department when qualified. Having spent time living in a developing nation – witnessing first-hand another country’s healthcare system – Lyndsey is passionate about protecting the NHS.

Lee Holden Levett Students Committee

Member for North West

Lee studies adult nursing at Liverpool. Previously he was an HCA in Blackpool and before that worked in fitness. He’s been a student rep and peer mentor during his degree.

Jodie Ashford Students Committee

Jodie Ashford

Member for South West, January 2018 - December 2019

Jodie is a third year adult nursing student at University West England (UWE). Alongside her position on the RCN Students Committee, Jodie has worked as a Student Ambassador, a Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) Leader, Senior PAL Leader and Media and Publicity Officer for the UWE Adult Nursing Society.

Sophie Lynn Students Committee

Sophie Lynn

Member for West Midlands

Sophie studies adult nursing at the University of Birmingham where she helped set up the nursing society. As an SIO she attended Congress 2016 as a voting member and describes this as a rewarding experience where she enjoyed participating in debates.

Katharine Youngs Students Committee

Katharine Youngs (ex-officio), January 2018 - December 2019

Member of the Trade Union Committee

Katharine is studying adult nursing at the University of Leeds. She is a peer support mentor at the University and a feature presenter on Leeds Student Radio. Katharine is deeply interested in human rights, humanitarian work, politics and international development. Previous to nursing, Katharine worked in retail, hospitality, customer services and sales both in the UK and Italy.

Lucy Mason Students Committee

Lucy Mason (ex-officio), January 2018 - December 2019

Member of the Professional Nursing Committee

Lucy is a 3rd year children’s nursing student at the University of Birmingham. Within her local RCN branch she is currently the branch secretary and has been an RCN Student Information Officer. She’s active on social media in a professional capacity. She has been shortlisted twice for Nursing Times Most Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year. Also, she is the project coordinator for The Student Nurse Project @StNurseProject. Lucy is very passionate about working in research when she qualifies.
