Alison Hesford

Alison Hesford

Member for Wales, January 2022 - December 2022

Alison is undertaking a degree in Adult Nursing at Bangor University. She commenced her role as an RCN Student Ambassador in February 2021 and during her time working with nursing staff and healthcare assistants on placement, discovered one of the key issues faced by the health workforce is staff retention. She describes the staff she has worked alongside as kind, professional and exemplary people whom have gone over and above in their teaching and support through the progression of her university course.

Alison has been heavily involved in the Fair Pay For Nursing campaign. She joined RCN reps, stewards and members on the steps of the Senedd in silent protest to display her support for nurses and nursing staff in what has arguably been one of the most stressful periods to work in healthcare. During her most recent placement in the operating theatres in one of the major hospitals in North Wales, Alison saw the importance of safe staffing and linked the Fair Pay For Nursing campaign in with the Safe Staffing Saves Lives (#ForTheFullTeam) campaign, and with the permission from the manager of theatres, produced a video highlighting the importance of a fair wage/salary, retention of staff, skill mix, and encouraged members to vote on the future of their pay. Alison, again, went to the Senedd with RCN colleagues to discuss the Nursing in Numbers 2021 report on Nursing Support Workers Day 23rd November 2021.

Alison hopes to continue her involvement in these campaigns as she sees the importance of staff retention on patient safety and the future of nursing. Her involvement in these campaigns has helped her to enhance her skills and knowledge of what nursing is about and the improvements that can be made to benefit all.

Before deciding to embark on her journey as a student nurse, Alison worked in healthcare for many years in multiple environments, including domiciliary care, residential homes and palliative care environments.
