RCN Careers: Dismissal

Applying for a job following a dismissal

Support for you during the application process

If you are applying for a job and you have been dismissed, or you are currently going through an investigation, we understand this can be a difficult time for you.  The RCN Careers Service can support you when you apply for jobs and attend interviews.

Getting started

Be open, honest and factual with potential employers about what has happened – from application to interview.  If you fail to disclose a recent dismissal, or NMC case, where asked to do so on an application form, this can later lead to withdrawal of a job offer.

Describe your reflection and learning from the situation and link to the NMC Code.

If you have been dismissed and/or referred to the NMC describe any formal or informal learning you have completed relevant to the error.  For example, any learning on medication administration or record keeping.

Describe how you have moved forward to address the issues raised – for example work experience gained since the incident.

Look after yourself – the RCN Healthy Workplace: Healthy You website can offer useful tools and resources for your own self-care.

If you have been dismissed or referred to the NMC and have received an initial response from the NMC, the RCN Careers Service can help talk through career options and how to disclose to a potential employer.
